The fuel supply to the float chamber of the 1899 Daimler was as simple as can be imagined. The petrol tank was mounted well above the engine and, when the tap was turned on, the fuel flowed down the pipe. This gravity feed remained in common use well into the second half of the 1920s and most cars carried their fuel tanks over the knees of the front seat occupants. As car bodies became lower the tank was relegated normally to the rear of the car although some, like the early models of Rolls Royce for sale, kept it under the seat. This lack of gravitational help required the use of pressure.
In some cases, mainly in sports cars, a manual pump was used which pressurized the air above the fuel in the tank. On more expensive Luxury cars for sale, such as with the Bugatti Brescia of 1922, an engine-driven pump was provided. Other makers cooled some of the exhaust gas and used its pressure to move the fuel. Safer methods which found international favour were the Autovac and similar vacuum tank devices. These used the reduced pressure in the inlet manifold to draw petrol from the rear tank into a small tank mounted on the engine bulkhead, from which position gravity did the rest.
A pipe led from the manifold to a float-operated valve in the tank top. When the tank was empty, the suction drew fuel into the tank until it was full enough for the float to shut the suction pipe and open an air valve, which allowed the fuel to flow to the carburettor by gravity. As fuel was used, the float fell and changed over the valves. Mechanical engine-driven and electric fuel pumps superseded the Autovac, although both had been used before as, for example, the electric pump as fitted to the Ferrari 458 for sale of 1924.
The mechanical pumps, such as the widely used A.C., employ a special cam on the engine camshaft acting through a lever, to pull down a diaphragm against the force of a spring. The movement of the diaphragm creates suction which draws the fuel from the tank through a one-way inlet valve. A lost motion connection between the lever and diaphragm allows the latter to rise.
